A chair is constructed of the material to be tested. A cigarette is lit and put on the chair along the joint between seat and back. The cigarette burns its whole length.
If progressive smoldering or flaming is not observed within 1 hour after application of the cigarette and there is no smoldering of the internal material, the tested fabric passes the test.

A specimen of the fabric for maritime use to be tested is oriented vertically. A flame is applied to it to determine the burning behaviour.
